CHINA - New Temporary Residence Registration Form in Shanghai
On October 1, 2008, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau issued a new Temporary Residence Registration Form for foreign nationals, which replaces the prior version of the form. All foreign national visitors and residents in Shanghai, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao passport holders, are required to complete temporary residence registration at the local police stations using the new form.
Foreign nationals who were issued the old form must re-register and obtain new Temporary Residence Registration Forms by November 30, 2008.
Those who change residence in Shanghai must have their residence permits amended at the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau within 10 days of obtaining a new Temporary Residence Registration Form.
Because registration processes may vary across local police stations, it is best to check with your specific police station to confirm requirements. Some police stations may request that the applicant report in person, although generally this is not required.
By way of background, foreign nationals are required to register their accommodations upon arrival in China. Temporary residence registration is required for in-country applications for Chinese visas and residence permits, or to amend or extend the same.
